Jim:

I agree that the two largest anti-virus providers are resource hogs and am looking at something that is effective and has less overhead. I looked into your recommended Microsoft product and it appears that the virus detection rate is much lower than other products. It also appears that it does not include heuristic detection which is a big one for me. I would be totally unprotected from new viruses until they appear in a new signature file. Can you explain to me why you have recommended this product?

I agree with the fustrations of required updates with PC's, but here is a case where the same issue applies to Apple products. OS X machines also require frequent, large updates.

Speaking of large, that is another problem. If you are on Hughesnet you have a daily download limit of 200 mb. That limit can be exceeded by the updates which then limits your ability to actually download those updates. When I know I have updates to download I can at least schedule them for the Hughesnet "free time," but with Windows updates I often do not have that choice.

I guess it is another thing we learn to live with...

Yes. If you have Windows Vista or 7, you just use the built in DVDMaker. If XP, then go back to the page where you downloaded Photo Story from Microsoft and you'll see a link to buy a $20 add-in.

We recently changed to a MAC computer and we have a Blackberry Storm phone with Verison set up to tether. I would not recommend this combination to anyone. The verison software and the mac do not get along. We have scoured the internet for a solution and have found some but have not been able to make any of them work. My geeky son says it it because the mac and the phone are fighting over control of the usb port. We may just change phones to a droid and tether with pda net as I am tired of rebooting my computer to get it to connect with a phone. Just thought I'd let you know this issue so as you travel and talk to people who have macs you'll know this is a problem. Thanks for all the great info on your site. I am just beginging to cruise through it.

Nice, short and succinct explanation. I was hoping for some easy fix. But . . . Spent the last five days dry camping on some private property just off US40 and about 12 miles from Duchesne, UT. My iPhone would show 5 bars until I clicked on the app to check email or log into Facebook. Then is was one or maybe two bars or worse NO SERVICE.

Another of the guests got out his laptop thinking he'd find a wifi hot spot and be able to get on the internet. Nothing for him either.

So, those of us who were camping began to wonder how we might get internet access. I think some of the nearby properties had either burried cable or telephone. Not sure. That might be an option for this location.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

I just finished driving Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA. I have a Droid + a GPS. The Droid did not work in some areas due to lack of towers. Other than that it was a dream. I have the APP Geodelic which I adore. It shows you everything around wherever you are. You can take my stove, refer, DW, etc. away but don't take my Droid.

The i-Pad internet connection is currently through ATT. Is there prospect of access through other providers, specifically Verizon, which appears to have the widest availability.
